The Tantum Ergo is an excerpt from the last two verses of the Pange Lingua Gloriosi Corporis Mysterium, a hymn written by Thomas Aquinas in about 1264 for the Feast of Corpus Christi. Tantum Ergo The Tantum Ergocomes from the last two stanzas from the Eucharistic Hymn, Pange Lingua, composed by St. Thomas and is used at Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Fun tidbit: a partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who recite it, and a plenary indulgence is granted to those who recite it on Holy Thursday or Corpus Christi. Tantum Ergo is usually sung before the Benediction when the priest blesses the congregation with the monstrance. It is also sung, as in this rendition as part of Pange Lingua, during processions of the Blessed Sacrament.
